These color changes, usually an increase in brown pigment, occur slowly and you may not notice them for months or years. This could result in a cosmetic difference in eye or eyelash color from one eye to the other.

An improvement in hyperemia following a switch of IOP-lowering therapy to bimatoprost 0.01% was defined as a change in hyperemia grouping from moderate-to-severe hyperemia to none-to-mild hyperemia. No change in hyperemia was defined as staying within the same hyperemia grouping at baseline and on treatment with bimatoprost 0.01%. A worsening in hyperemia following a switch of IOP-lowering therapy to bimatoprost 0.01% was defined as a change in hyperemia grouping from none-to-mild hyperemia to moderate-to-severe hyperemia. Two-sided McNemar tests were used to evaluate treatment effects. IOP change and IOP percentage change from baseline were analyzed at weeks 6 and 12 using two-sided paired t-tests.

Lumigan eye drops are prescribed to treat certain types of glaucoma and other causes of high pressure inside the eye. Lumigan contains the medication bimatoprost and works by regulating and lowering the pressure in the eye by increasing the amount of fluid which drains out of the eye. Lumigan can also be prescribed to treat eyelash hypotrichosis. It can be used on the upper eyelashes to increase their growth, making them longer, thicker and darker.

Bimatoprost is also used to treat glaucoma. If you are already using or are directed to use bimatoprost to treat glaucoma, be careful not to get this eyelash medication into your eyes. Getting extra bimatoprost in your eyes may make it less effective for treating glaucoma. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist for more details.

Read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start using bimatoprost and each time you get a refill. Learn how to properly apply this medication. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

When the eye drop form of this medication is applied directly into the eyes to treat glaucoma, it may slowly (over months to years) cause brown discoloration of the colored portion of the eye (iris). This form of bimatoprost used to improve eyelash appearance could also have this effect. Also, this medication may cause eyelid changes or a darkening of the skin around the base of the eyelashes. After stopping use, eyelid skin darkening should go away after several weeks to months. However other side effects (such as discoloration of the iris) may be permanent. Tell your doctor if any of these side effects occur.

Before using bimatoprost, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to similar drugs (such as latanoprost, travoprost); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients (such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride), which can cause allergic reactions or other problems (such as discoloration of contact lenses). Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Warnings and Precautions: In patients using LUMIGAN (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) or other prostaglandin analogs for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), the concomitant use of LATISSE may interfere with the desired reduction in IOP. Patients using prostaglandin analogs including LUMIGAN for IOP reduction should only use LATISSE after consulting with their physician and should be monitored for changes to their intraocular pressure.

Increased iris pigmentation has occurred when bimatoprost solution was administered. Patients should be advised about the potential for increased brown iris pigmentation, which is likely to be permanent.

Bimatoprost has been reported to cause pigment changes (darkening) to periorbital pigmented tissues and eyelashes. The pigmentation is expected to increase as long as bimatoprost is administered, but has been reported to be reversible upon discontinuation of bimatoprost in most patients.

Other effects of this drug may include gradual changes in eyelid pigmentation, changes in iris pigmentation, changes in eyelash pigmentation, growth and thickness.13 Patients should be informed of these possible effects, especially if this drug is only administered to one eye, which may noticeably change in appearance with bimatoprost treatment.13

Bimatoprost imitates the effects of prostamides, specifically prostaglandin F2α.14 Bimatoprost mildly stimulates aqueous humor outflow, relieving elevated intraocular pressure and decreasing the risk of optic nerve damage. It is thought that bimatoprost reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) in humans by causing an increase in outflow of the aqueous humor via the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral pathways.13 It achieves the above effects by decreasing tonographic resistance to aqueous humor outflow.6 Bimatoprost does not affect aqueous humor production.5 041b061a72
